So in case you are wondering how NOT on top of things I am, I made this coat for participating in the Project Run and Play Flickr pool the first part of September, just after the themes were announced (I didn't post it then because I had decided to wait for signature style week, which is the last week) I wanted to make the dress and leggings to go with it before I photographed it, and so it sat languishing in the closet until yesterday when I finally made the dress. (which will be shared in the next couple of posts)
The coat is made from a wool blend that I bought in Arizona just before moving out here, it's from Hancock Fabrics, and I got it for $2 a yard.
At the time I bought it I thought I was going to make myself a skirt, apparently not once inspiration struck!
The fox pockets are made from wool felt that I purchased here in Korea at Dongdaemun. These are pretty much just for show as they are rather shallow and there are regular side pockets in the coat. I have step by step pictures of making the foxes that I will post later this week too.
I made the sleeves quite full, and then gathered them into a circular cuff that is big enough for her hand without any buttons.
The neck has a vintage-esque rounded collar, and two faux buttons.
The jacket actually closes with 3 sew on magnetic purse snaps that I found at our local fabric store Happy Quilt; the snaps do a really good job of finding themselves without too much fiddling. I didn't want to add buttonholes to this coat because the wool blend fabric has a really open weave, and I didn't want to put any holes in it, even with the edge being bound like a buttonhole, I think it would fray easily. (Because Purse snaps are so strong, they don't pop open on their own either.)
The cotton lining is one I bought in the US too; I got it on sale at Joann Fabrics, and loved it so much I bought it without a purpose which lead to not buying as much as I should have, so the sleeves are actually lined in a plain orange fabric on the bottom half, which is okay since you would only see it if the coat was fully inside out.
for the headband/earmuffs I took a rectangular tube of the wool blend and added a loop to cinch middle, along with a small rectangle to make the bow. The fox head is made from rabbit fur, and I got it at Dongdaemun as well.
The Back is just velcroed shut
Here's a view of the side pocket,
I added a piece of measuring tape ribbon into the back yoke seam indicating what size range Emmie was in when I drafted the pattern, so hopefully whoever inherits this wont have to guess what size it is!
A better view of the inner lining with help from my lovely camera bag assistant. You can only see the matching lining here because only the lower portion of the sleeves is the wrong color (I pieced the top half to be the right fabric)
I thought I had a picture of a woman's coat from Anthropologie, that I liked a lot because it was wool, and heavy, but had a back yoke with feminine gathering on it, but now I can't find the picture anywhere and my google fu is failing me in trying to find it somewhere. But anyway, that image that I can now not share with you, was sort of what I had stuck in my head for the body shape of my coat. While messing around looking for the picture, I did find this image of an Anthropologie children's coat that I thought had some similar lines to what I made, which is sort of cool to see that I am somewhat on trend for something anyway (truth be told I like mine better.)
I'm going to schedule the dress post to follow this one, and then I will dig up the fox pocket in progress Photos, so I can try to get all the info of this project uploaded in the next week. I am trying to go through all my pictures that I have taken with every good intention of writing blog posts, but instead I just move onto the next project without writing a word.

Cute cute. Wool coats are soooo cute. And I love the gathering in the back. And the tape measure is such a cute/funny idea!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the vintage vibe, but also love that is so fresh & modern, too.
ReplyDeleteI prefer your version, too :)
I'll have to remember that tip when running low on lining fabric.
I appreciate all the details you put into it.. the magnetic purse snaps are super smart, as is the measuring tape as the size tag.
And you must blog more about the fox head made out of rabbit fur!!! How did you make that!?!
Thanks so much! Sorry, I need be more clear! I bought the fox head that is made out of rabbit fur at Dongdaemun, not the rabbit fur out of which I made the fox head....... I am afraid that my only effort put into the head was to whip out 3,000 Korean Won (a little less than $3) to purchase it.
DeleteLove the foxy coat & coordinating headband. Super stylish with the colorful lining & adorable pockets, it's simply fun, fun!
